KOP Review - Great First Novel [Mar. 15th, 2009|09:12 pm]

KOP, Koba Office of Police, is a wonderful first effort from newcomer Warren Hammond.

This Scifi Detective Noir novel is dark and gritty just the way we like it. Juno Mozambe is a dirty cop, and he is one of the good (?) guys. Lagarto was once a flourishing planet with a Brandy made from an indigenous plant that was in high demand. That is until someone got a hold of that plant and put them out of business.

Now Lagarto is a dirt poor cesspool of a planet and Koba, the planets largest city, is crumbling around them. Juno is an aging, ailing cop going through the motions when he is asked by his Chief and long time partner to do him the favor of looking into a homicide. He is partnered with an idealistic newcomer on her first big case and with dreams of cleaning up the city. Juno prefers to work alone.

Juno does whatever is necessary to get the job done. He is a hothead and at time brutal but that is Lagarto, brutal, desperate and filled with Lizards. Lizards, lizards everywhere.

Overall a great novel filled with action, suspense, anti hero, and well ... lizards.

Zoe's Tale - Last Colony from Zoe's POV [Mar. 15th, 2009|09:06 pm]

Great as a standalone and fits well in the Old Man's War universe. The story is from the standpoint of Zoe, the adopted daughter of the main characters from Old Man's War and The Ghost Brigades. Most of the story takes place in the same time line as "The Last Colony", Hugo nominated and runner up in 2008. You would think if having read TLC that you knew the story, not so.

Yes many of the names, places and faces are the same this is Zoe's Story and give her unique perspective on the events.

If you have wanted more of Zoe after reading TLC, here it is, and is a great effort from Scalzi, not having been a teen age girl, (As far as I know and him publicly stating that fact) does a great job of capturing the character.

Plenty of action and humor to go around. Highly recommended. Does Scalzi have another Hugo nominee in Zoe's Tale?

Review: Wicked Game [Oct. 4th, 2008|03:17 pm]

Recovering con artist Ciara Griffin is trying to live the straight life, even if it means finding a (shudder!) real job. She takes an internship at a local radio station, whose late-night time-warp format features 1940s blues, '60s psychedelia, '80s goth, and more, all with an uncannily authentic flair. Ciara soon discovers just how the DJs maintain their cred: they're vampires, stuck forever in the eras in which they were turned.

The station and the lives of the DJs are threatened by a giant media conglomerate that wants to turn the station into another top 40 clone, which we have way too many of anyway. To boost ratings and save the lives of her strange new friends, Ciara re-brands the station as “WVMP, the Lifeblood of Rock ’n’ Roll.”, disguising the bloody truth as just a marketing gimmick.

Wicked game is an intriguing story with some great and complex characters. Ciara is strong, capable, and conflicted. Her first instinct is to get what she can and bail as she has been raised to do but she wants to change and help her new friends, especially Grunge DJ Shane. If she truly wants to make a break with her past and do right by them her plan has to work, quickly, and without anyone getting hurt or killed in the process.

Wicked Game has some takes on the Vampire genre that I really liked and hadn’t seen before but based on established Vampire lore. For me it was a good mix of suspense, humor, the paranormal and a definite page turning good time.

The tagline on the cover ‘Blood, Sex and Rock n Roll’ hooked me right away. Complete with a playlist, chapter titles of popular songs and a WVMP radio site with DJ playlists it really lives up to its billing. The first chapter is up on the author’s website and after reading it I new I had to read this one, I wasn’t disappointed. After you finish there are two additional ‘how they were turned’ stories on the website which are also excellent. In the marketing spirit of the main character there is a website for WVMP where you can listen to playlists for the different DJs and pick up WVMP merchandise. I found myself listening as I read the book and as I did this review. Have Fun!

Review: Stargate Roswell [Oct. 3rd, 2008|09:44 pm]
SG Roswell

When a Stargate malfunction throws Colonel Cameron Mitchell, Dr. Daniel Jackson, and Colonel Sam Carter back in time, they only have minutes to live. But their rescue, by an unlikely duo--General Jack O'Neill and Vala Mal Doran--is only the beginning of their problems.

A great melding of the SG1 teams of Jack O'neill and Cam Mitchell (seasons 9 and 10). Time travel and alternate time lines oh my! Like Teal'c I love the whole Roswell Incident mythos which is why I initially bought it. It doesn't disappoint. I enjoyed seeing Some of our favorite classic authors represented and 'helping out the team'. At times the writing was rough and hard to follow. At times the voice didn't match the character but the intricate story kept me going. Enjoyable read.

End Of An Experience [Aug. 26th, 2008|05:02 pm]
[mood |sadsad]

A group of us made the 'Trek' out for one last 'mission'. As you probably know the Star Trek Experience is ending it's 10+ year mission at the Las Vegas Hilton on Sept 1st, 2008.

A couple of our Intrepid crew had never been so it was equally cool to go with them and have it all new and cool.  We did the Back Stage Tour and it was different from the last time we went but always cool. I am glad we did that once again as well.

The place was packed, more packed than I had seen it on previous trips, most likely people seeing it for the first time or wanting to have on last Experience. Lines were out the door and down the hall all three days we were there. It was an added bonus that I got to do it on my birthday!

We had a nice meal at Quark's on Sun before heading out to the Airport. The food was really good, I had the Jambalaya. The food there was better that the rest of the Hilton come to think of it. It was equally cool and sad at the same time. All but one shop was closed and very little remained merchandise wise. I did get two hats I hadn't seen before, Romulan Ale and Light Ale, very cool.

We will miss having the Star Trek Experience as one of our must see travel destinations. We wish you well...

Just added a plugin called "Live Press". With it I should be able to cross post to my livejournal. Let's see if it works.
